Whilst the precise origins of golf are unclear, with debate involving the Netherlands and China, traditionally it is seen as a sport having its roots firmly in Scotland with The Old Links, Musselburgh being recognised as the oldest playing golf course in the world. The modern day rules of the game can be traced back to the ‘Leith Rules’ which were written in 1744 for the Company of Gentlemen Golfers who played, naturally, at Leith Links with many of the original instructions still valid today. During the 18th and 19th centuries the game started to spread as people moved around the world taking the sport with them, but it wasn’t until the latter part of the 19th century did it truly become popular outside of Scotland. For example between 1880 and 1914 the number of golf courses in England rose from 12 to over a 1000! What’s more the number of holes has not always been 18. At St Andrews, regarded as the golfing capital, there were originally 11 holes with the game being played out and then back again, making a total of 22 holes. The layout was dictated to by the layout of the land, but in 1764 some of the holes were considered to be too short and so the number was reduced to 9, thus setting up an 18 hole course. Needless to say, where St Andrews led the others followed! |
